Communication Tips for the Festive Season

November 15, 2025

The festive season is a time for joy, togetherness, and conversation – whether that’s around the dinner table, at a busy Christmas market, or during New Year’s celebrations. But for those living with hearing loss, this time of year can also bring challenges. Background noise, multiple people talking at once, and busy environments can make communication more difficult.

As your local independent audiology team in Derby, we at Just Hearing we want to ensure you can make the most of the festive period. Here are some simple tips to help you, and your loved ones, enjoy clearer, more comfortable conversations this Christmas.

1. Choose the Right Environment

When possible, opt for quieter corners of the room or venues with softer furnishings that absorb sound. If you’re hosting, consider turning down background music so that conversation takes centre stage.

2. Favour Small Group Chats

It’s easier to follow conversations in smaller groups. If a large family gathering feels overwhelming, try catching up with two or three people at a time. This way, everyone feels heard and included.

3. Make Use of Good Lighting

Seeing facial expressions and lip movements can make a huge difference. Position yourself somewhere well-lit, ideally facing the person speaking. Hosts can also help by ensuring lighting isn’t too dim during festive meals or gatherings.

4. Speak Clearly (Not Loudly)

If you’re chatting with someone who has hearing loss, remember that clarity is more important than volume. Speak at a natural pace, facing them directly. Shouting can distort speech, while clear articulation is far more effective.

5. Signal Topic Changes

In group conversations, it helps to indicate when you’re changing the subject – for example, saying “speaking of presents…” before starting a new thread. This gives everyone a chance to follow along. Be patient and ready to rephrase what is being said if you notice they are struggling to follow all that is said.

6. Take Listening Breaks

Busy social events can be tiring for people with hearing difficulties. Stepping away for a short break – even just for five minutes – can help recharge your listening energy.

7. Don’t Leave Hearing Aids at Home

If you wear hearing aids, make sure they’re in good working order before festive gatherings. A quick battery check or cleaning can make all the difference. If you haven’t had a recent hearing aid service, now is a good time to book one to check your hearing aids in their best working order. You can book these in with our team to ensure you're ready for the festive season.
