Protecting Your Hearing This Halloween & Bonfire Night

October 15, 2025

From trick-or-treating and spooky parties to firework displays and sparklers, it’s a time of fun, family, and festivity. But whilst these occasions bring joy, they can also be surprisingly noisy.

You can take a few small steps so that you can help you and your loved ones enjoy the season safely without putting your hearing at risk.

Fireworks & Your Ears

Did you know that fireworks can reach sound levels of up to 150 decibels? That’s louder than a jet engine, and well above the threshold that can damage hearing and trigger tinnitus. Even short bursts at this level can be harmful, particularly for children.

Tips for Firework Safety:

  • Keep your distance: Stand at least 15–20 metres away from fireworks where possible.
  • Use ear protection: Foam or reusable earplugs can reduce harmful noise levels without spoiling the experience.
  • Look after little ears: Well-fitting children’s ear defenders are an excellent choice for younger family members.

Halloween Parties & Busy Events

Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or attending a lively bonfire night gathering, background noise can make conversations harder - especially for anyone living with hearing loss.

Communication Tips:

  • Choose a quieter space to chat when possible.
  • Make sure lighting is good so that facial expressions and lip movements are visible.
  • If you use hearing aids, check batteries or charge them before heading out.

After the Celebrations

It’s normal to experience temporary ringing in your ears (tinnitus) after being exposed to loud noise, but if it lasts more than 24 hours, it may be a sign of damage. Don’t ignore it — book a hearing check for peace of mind.
